How to reduce an image to 200 KB (or any size limit)

Forms and uploads often demand a maximum file size. Here is how to hit it without ruining the picture.

“Upload a photo smaller than 200 KB.” Application forms, government portals and job sites love this rule, and a phone photo is usually ten times too large. You can hit the limit in a minute, and the picture will still look fine on a screen.

The quick way: type the size you need

  1. Open the Image Compressor and drop in your photo. You can drop several at once.
  2. Choose target file size and type the limit, for example 200 KB.
  3. Compare before and after, then download. With several images you can get everything as one ZIP.

What actually makes a file small

Three things control the size of an image, and it helps to know which one to change.

  • Dimensions. A 4000 × 3000 photo has twelve million pixels. A website rarely needs more than 1600 pixels on the long side. Shrinking the dimensions is the biggest saving, and you can do it in the Image Resizer or with the maximum width option in the compressor.
  • Quality. For photos, a quality of 70 to 80 percent usually looks identical to the original while cutting the size dramatically.
  • Format. JPG and WebP are made for photos. PNG is lossless, so it stays large; choose WebP or JPG as the output when you need big savings.

If the form wants an exact size or shape

Portal photos often need a fixed size such as 600 × 600 pixels. Use the Image Resizer with Fill the frame, which crops from the centre without stretching, and then compress the result to the size limit.

Why did my PNG not get smaller?

PNG saves every pixel exactly, so quality settings do nothing. Convert it to JPG with the Image Converter (or choose JPG or WebP as the output), and it will shrink a lot, unless it needs transparency.
