About Average Calculator
This average calculator takes a list of numbers and gives you the count, sum, mean (average), median, mode, smallest, largest, range, population and sample standard deviation, and geometric mean in one go. Paste numbers separated by spaces, commas, semicolons or new lines, and every figure updates as you type.
Arabic-Indian digits and Arabic commas are accepted. Entries that are not numbers are skipped, so check the count to confirm that every value was read. The mode lists every value tied for most frequent, or shows none if no value repeats. The sample deviation needs at least two numbers, and the geometric mean needs all values above zero. Results show up to six decimals and nothing leaves your browser.
How to use Average Calculator
- 01
Type or paste your numbers.
- 02
Separate them with spaces, commas or new lines.
- 03
Read the average and the other statistics.
When to use it
- Work out the average of exam marks or a student's grades.
- Find the median of salaries or prices to avoid distortion from extreme values.
- Check the spread of measurements with the standard deviation and range.
- Find the most frequent value in survey answers or a set of sizes.
- Calculate the geometric mean of growth factors or ratios.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate the average of a list of numbers?
Add all the numbers and divide by how many there are. Paste the list into the box and the calculator shows the sum, the count and the mean, along with the median, mode and other statistics.
What is the difference between mean, median and mode?
The mean is the sum divided by the count. The median is the middle value after sorting, or the average of the two middle values for an even count. The mode is the most frequent value.
What does the calculator show when there is no mode?
If no value repeats, it shows none. If several values tie for the most repeats, it lists all of them, from smallest to largest, separated by commas.
What is the difference between population and sample standard deviation?
Population standard deviation divides by the count and suits a complete set of data. Sample standard deviation divides by the count minus one and suits a sample from a larger group. The sample version needs at least two numbers.
When does the geometric mean show a dash?
The geometric mean is only calculated when all values are above zero. If any value is zero or negative, it shows a dash. The tool uses the n-th root of the product of all values.
How are separators and non-numeric entries handled?
Numbers can be separated by spaces, commas, semicolons, Arabic commas or new lines. Anything that is not a number is ignored, so compare the count with the numbers you expected.
Is there a limit on the numbers, and is the data uploaded?
There is no limit set by the tool, and the calculation happens in your browser, so your numbers are not uploaded. Very long lists depend on your device's performance. Results are rounded to six decimals for display.
