About Find and Replace Text

This find and replace tool searches your text for a word, phrase or pattern and replaces every match at once. Paste your text, type what to find and what to replace it with, and the updated text appears below with a count of the replacements made. It is quick for renaming terms, fixing repeated typos or reformatting lists.

By default the search is a plain, case-sensitive text match, and special characters are treated literally. Tick Ignore case to match any capitalisation, or Regular expression to use patterns; in the replacement, $1, $2 and so on insert capture groups and $& inserts the whole match. An invalid pattern shows an error message. The tool always replaces all matches. Nothing is uploaded.

Frequently asked questions

How do I replace all occurrences of a word in a text?

Paste your text, type the word in Find and the new word in Replace with. The result box updates instantly and every match is replaced, with the number of replacements shown below the fields.

Is the search case-sensitive?

By default yes, so Apple will not match apple. Tick Ignore case to match any capitalisation. The replacement text is inserted exactly as you type it, whatever the case of the original match.

How do I use regular expressions and capture groups?

Tick Regular expression, then write a JavaScript-style pattern such as (\d+)-(\d+). In the replacement use $1 and $2 for the groups, for example $2/$1 to swap two numbers, or $& for the entire match.

What does Invalid pattern mean?

It means your regular expression has a syntax problem, such as an unclosed bracket or a stray parenthesis. Fix the pattern or untick Regular expression to search for the characters literally. The text is left unchanged meanwhile.

Can I replace only the first match, or match whole words?

No. The tool always replaces every match and has no separate whole-word option. For whole words in regex mode, wrap the term in word boundaries, for example \bcat\b, so that category is left alone.

Does it work with Arabic text, and is it private?

Yes, Arabic and other Unicode text can be searched and replaced. Everything runs in your browser, so your text is not uploaded, and there is no sign-up or limit on text length.
